Few and Far Women are an international crew of bad-ass ladies with US artist Meme (pronounced “Mimi”) as their founder-leader. She combined her two passions – skateboarding and spray-painting – in the Few and Far Women project starting in 2011. The evolving crew come together on mural projects around the world. Meme is a fearless rule-breaker who skates without a helmet and can be found tagging railcars. Look at her Insta and see for yourself.
According to her bio, Meme was attracted to skateboarding and got abuse from male skaters and then found herself in another male-dominated world when she picked up the spray can. Instead of backing down, she founded an all women crew of skaters and artists “who would get together, skate, paint, travel empower and support one another as women and artists.”
Some members of the Few and Far Women are trained and others are self-taught. Their work is eclectic in theme and style, but some of the recurring subjects are women and girls, nature, and intricate graffiti writing. Meme and Minas (Indonesia) both focus on lettering and smaller elements of figures of women, animals, and flowers. Many of the artists’ work focuses on social justice. The highly skilled Agana (US), for example “paints prolific imagery as calls to action encompassing black liberation, women’s empowerment, environmental and racial justice issues.”
Shoutout to local artist @volta_mia who worked with @fewandfarwomen in Miami in 2022. Her mural of a hot pink and purple octopus wearing arm-band floaties on two tentacles and clutching SPF 305 (the original Miami area code) sunscreen is still up on 5th Avenue near 27th Street in Wynwood among other panels by @fewandfarwomen
